who imagines a supernova where all there is is a candle | we undertake, can only flourish when led by those whose vision supercedes that of mediocrity. It's from those few..........the original and exceptional individuals among us, that we receive the perfect certainty of greatness. Individual greatness inspires everyone else to experiment with brand-new thought, evolutionary | SANTIAGO CALATRAVA for so long now, that I can't even remember when I first discovered him. The above image is his Planetarium, which is part of the Calatrava-designed, Valencia Museum of Science and Art. Only the upper half of this image is the Planetarium. The bottom half is its reflection in the water that surrounds it, creating the mirage of a sphere or planet, where in actuality, there exists only half a globe. Two of Calatrava's early designs are this beautifully-formed communication tower and his bridge in Alamillo, which in its graceful simplicity, exemplifies the perfect certainty of radical excellence. The first Calatrava design in the USA was the Milwaukee Art Museum, on whose website you'll find many images of its fascinating interior and exterior architecture, as well as descriptions of Calatrava's technological genius..........like entire structural sections that can be moved to shield the building's interior from the sun, and sub-floors designed around radiant heating and cooling systems. I've been told that this brilliant architect is now working on the WTC Path Terminal in Manhattan. | creates sculptural environments that are unique in this world. His stainless steel "Cloud Gate" in Chicago's Millennium Park was designed to interact with the people beneath it, the sky above it, and the buildings surrounding it. The quiet dignity of this man's work, makes one wonder why the art of others seems to be so agitated and demanding in comparison. Anish Kapoor's certainty of vision inspired him to present his creations within their own environment which permits them to escape the cacaphony of exhibition spaces filled with disparate works that must compete for the viewer's attention. The above "Cloud Gate" invites all things around itself to create a constantly-changing environment by reflecting their images on its curved surface..........while the strange appearance of a tilted floor, serves to isolate and thereby celebrate, this reincarnation of a simple and familiar form. | before people got really clever with computer imaging, so I figured at the time, that it was a fabulous, evolutionary sculpture titled BLUE MAN GROUP When I discovered that those men were real, I had no idea how they produced those "sculptures". Perhaps they printed lifesize cut-outs of themselves and attached them to the top of those telephone poles just long enough to take some pictures? It's my understanding that the original Blue Man Group was initiated by 3 men -- Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton, and Chris Wink -- who started out as a kind of guerrilla theater on Manhattan's sidewalks, then slowly progressed to an entity of several dozen performers who now appear [always in groups of 3] in theaters around the globe. The Blue Man Group invented the use of PVC pipes as unique sound instruments. Their brilliant inclusion of interactive video images, exudes the creative synergy worthy of a new millennium, while their radical identity concept of 3 blue faces collaborating as a unit, has established this group as a one-of-a-kind phenomenon in the world of performance art. | our intellectual needs to the many emotional ones so brilliantly explained by Freud, PIERO FERRUCCI seeks to expand our spirit. Ferrucci credits much of his work to that of Roberto Assagioli, who originated the principles of Psychosynthesis, which aims to unite the 3 forces of emotion, intellect, and spirit, so that they may function as an integrated and powerful synthesis. In his seminal book "What We May Be" Ferrucci offers many evolutionary thoughts and techniques designed to detach the spirit from negative elements that increase its density and keep it down. Once free, it may then spontaneously rise to its origin, or, in his own words: "As pure consciousness gains in clarity and fullness, a a more potent and persuasive symbol of individual freedom combined with the radical excellence of a manufactured product, than motorcycles created by HARLEY DAVIDSON William Harley met Arthur Davidson almost exactly a hundred years ago, after which they started their first factory and designed their first V-Twin engine. During World War 2, US manufacturers produced 95,000 planes 3 million tons of warship 80,000 artillery guns and 90,000 Harley Davidson military bikes equipped with 2-way radios, gun compartments, and hand-cranked sirens. Since then, Harley Davidson has gained world-wide appreciation for an American icon that represents power made manifest..........the true spirit of independence........the tension of purpose........the joy of perfection ........and the unyielding strength of professional integrity. | the intense anxiety of a terrifying hole in the New York skyline, which appeared overnight after the 911 massacre? Who originated the magnificent TRIBUTE IN LIGHT that transformed the horror it represents in such a way, that while still remembering it with intense shock, we are nevertheless inspired to rise above the evil intent of its perpetrators? Information about the originator of "Tribute in Light" points to Paul Myoda, a Manhattan artist who, together with his friend and fellow-artist Julian LaVerdiere, responded to a NY Times invitation with the concept of 2 beacons of light named "Phantom Towers"......that consisted of 88 searchlights placed in 2 side-by-side, 50-foot squares. They were then introduced to lighting designer Paul Marantz, and with the help of more than 50 private and corporate sponsors, proceeded to build the uncompromising, creative integrity of what many perceive to be the most significant gift of conceptual art to the new millennium. | but I wasn't aware of that, until I saw this beautiful steel sculpture (I don't know who created it) in the early 90's, when NO FEAR became the perfect mantra for America's CONCRETE HEROES who originated their sport on the cement walls of California's empty swimming pools, where curved ramps provided the seductive challenge to continue up and beyond the pool's earthbound edges, and to soar into the death-defying aerial flights and mid-air turns of skateboard's champions. Unlike other sports, for which the rules were established by previous generations, skateboarding reflects the true individualism of its rider..........his ability to invent new techniques..........his personal sense of pride..........his inner demand for perfection, and his constant dedication to the achievement of excellence. Skateboarding has branched out into snowboarding and BMX. It also inspired other extreme sports, and has developed a worldwide following of enthusiatic disciples, many of whom compete in the summer and winter X-games and who may soon find a well-deserved place in the Olympics. A pretty amazing result of these brand-new sports, is the invention of brand-new helmets designed to provide much more protection for the rider's face than any other helmets available, till now. In fact, it might be a good idea (if they haven't already started to do so) for our military to use these helmets as a jumping-off point for some much-needed improvement on their own rather outdated (circa World War One?) helmets that do not adequately protect our troops. | of our own imagination and thought process, to visualize and to thereby actualize whatever we wish to become and to achieve. In her deceptively simple, yet profoundly revolutionary of visionary power and true creative excellence, it would be the St.Louis Arch, designed by Eero Saarinen more than half a century ago. At a hight of 630 feet or 63 stories, the St.Louis Arch is For a detailed description accompanied by numerous photographs and on earth, as beauty and the aesthetic experience of greatness. They have the power to revitalize our often shattered lives, and to provide us with a stronghold against negative experiences. There exists no more authentically original rock band than Pink Floyd's concerts and their explosive, visionary lightshows, provide Radical Excellence has the ability to destroy psychological poisons. JAUME PLENSA whose inner-light sculptures are magnificent when displayed on earthbound pedestals, but become uniquely ephemeral when suspended against a wall from which they seem to have emerged as new-born forms of art heralding the discovery of a daring and successful experiment in which every concept that once seemed logical, has been replaced forever. In some of his other works, Plensa builds Jaume Plensa is also the creator of the immensely popular Crown Fountain promised myself that the ugly steel boxes stacked on top of each other in every home, would never be allowed to enter my own residence. Fortunately, Steve Perlman had just invented WebTV. I bought one, discovered the Internet, and had a wonderful time.
